Xiaoyang Wu 吴笑阳

I am a Master's student in Design Studies at Harvard GSD, focusing on Human-Computer Interaction and Human-centered AI. My research spans across ubiquitous sensing, multimodal and agentic AI, and multisensory interaction
Alongside my studies at GSD, I also work with the SEA Lab at Columbia University on AI for health and wellbeing, advised by Prof. Xuhai "Orson" Xu.
Before GSD, I received my Bachelor of Architecture at Zhejiang University, where I was an undergraduate researcher in Guanyun Lab, working on HCI and fabrication, advised by Prof. Guanyun Wang.
I am now also a research intern at Microsoft Research Asia, working on Human-centered AI.

Human intelligence runs on an ancient loop — we perceive the world, reason about it, and act back on it — but that loop was shaped by evolution for survival: enough to keep us alive, not enough to let us flourish. What if an intelligence were not bound by the same limits?What if it could perceive us and the world around us more deeply than we perceive ourselves — revealing what our own bodies, senses, and awareness keep hidden from us?What if it could reason over all of it as a whole — across modalities, people, and time no single human mind could ever hold — surfacing meaning we could never think our way to alone?What if it could act and express itself not only in language, but across the full range of human — and more-than-human — senses, so that humans and intelligent systems fuse more naturally into extensions of one another?

I build ubiquitous sensing systems that capture the continuous, implicit signals humans and their environments generate — across body, behavior, and environment — on scalable, everyday devices, expanding the sensing infrastructure available to intelligent systems.I develop multimodal and agentic AI that reasons, generates, and acts across heterogeneous modalities, at scales spanning people, time, and context beyond what any human mind can hold or body can act on.I build multisensory interaction systems that close this loop — exploring how humans, AI, and other intelligent systems might communicate through channels beyond language, toward a fusion of human and machine richer and more natural than language alone allows.

My long-term vision is a future where technology extends the human along every dimension we are not naturally equipped for — sensing what our bodies filter out, reasoning past the limits of our minds, and interacting through senses richer than language — augmenting rather than replacing what makes us human, so that human flourishing expands with it.
